Meet Marissa

I began on piano when I was 6 years old, then added violin at age 7. Music was a pillar in my life, and from early on I felt a calling to pursue violin. I attended many summer music camps that solidified this calling in my journey, and this was where I began to play viola in addition to violin. This began my shift to focus primarily on viola, which is what I pursued into higher education. I received my undergraduate degree from Luther College, and my masters degree in Viola Performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Though I consider viola my primary, I never let the violin go. This love and dedication to both instruments is the unique perspective I carry into my studio. In my professional life as a freelancing musician, I play both interchangeably, and love the flexibility and contrast both give me.

After leaving the music school teacher scene in 2020, I opened my own private studio that I operate out of my home. I love being able to work with students of all ages on their musical journey.

I began studying with Dr. Stephanie Allen in 2023 to complete certification in “Violin Technique Coaching”, and scaffolded approach to the rigorous technique of the violin greats fusing emotional regulation and care. I have completed this training through level 2, and what I have learned has been incredibly impactful to my teaching and overall health as a performer myself.
